The category of expression in new music
Research abstract

We will investigate the relationship between expression and New Music in Theodor Adorno's philosophy of music. New Music is based on the refusal of traditional musical language, which makes expression take on new functions. Thus, we will see how Adorno interprets the function of expression in the context of the constellations of problems that characterize the different moments of New Music, ranging from expressionism, when expression operates as a critic of appearance, to serialism, in which one sees the abandonment of expression in favor of the ideal of technical artwork. Finally, we will examine the viability of a non-ideological expression based on the notion of informal music, and see if this critical notion of expression is present in Morton Feldman's work.
