This dissertation aims to affirm the interpretative possibility of “Nausea” based on the notion of melancholy. To this end, this dissertation departs from the dual task of mapping and developing the term, as mentioned by Sartre in “Nausea” (1938) and “The Imaginary” (1940). The central use of these two works is justified insofar as we consider there to be a relevant thematic connection between them. With this, we intend to show that melancholy is an important key to understanding Roquentin’s narrative in affective and aesthetic terms. Therefore, together with the notions of sadness and emptiness, we will seek to show that Roquentin’s melancholy is best understood as a “feeling-passion.” In turn, this will lead us to highlight the character Anny in the affective scenario of “Nausea”. Regarding the aesthetic theme, we consider music to be the fundamental artistic element in characterizing Roquentin’s melancholy. With this position, we affirm that music has a privileged place in the reading of “Nausea.”
