Nietzsche, Wagner and Bayreuth romanticism
Research abstract

I intend to present a hermeneutics for Nietzsche's youthful writings. To achieve this, it is necessary to relate the philosopher's writings to Wagner's ideas that give shape to the composer's aesthetic project for the newly unified Germany after his plan to create a Festival Theater in Bayreuth became viable. I also intend to present Bayreuth as an episode that represents the realization of the history of German romanticism in the 19th century. This story is generally told around some romantic circles: it is usually to mention “Iena romanticism”, there is still talk of “Berlin romanticism”, but never “Bayreuth romanticism”. The expression “Bayreuther Romantik” itself was never consecrated in this context, a foul that, for the history of German romanticism, may seem surprising, especially if we consider the dimensions that Wagner's romantic cause reached inside and outside Germany. Seeking to fill this gap, I coined, since the title of the work, the expression “Bayreuth romanticism” to highlight the Wagnerian festival as a fundamental part of the history of German romanticism that will be approached through the prism of the friendship between Nietzsche and Wagner.
