Research title
Patriarchy and capitalism in Bertolt Brecht’s work
Research abstract

Since 1970, several authors appropriated Brechtian concepts and practices to develop a feminist theatre, critical of social and ideological constructions of gender, stating, however, that such criticism was not put into practice by the playwright in his theatre. This research aims to clarify the existence, in Brecht’s theatre, of a critical dimension of patriarchal structures as a foundation of capitalism. The work is divided into: 1) critical review of Feminist and Marxist receptions to Brecht’s theatre; 2) performing an immanent critique of his theatre, from a feminist and materialistic perspective, through the analysis of texts and staging, aiming to explain how it expresses both the patriarchal oppression and exploitation of women and accomplishes a criticism of them, in content and form dimensions, of the theatrical language itself and forms of representation. Thus, is intended to supply a critical gap in the reception of Brechtian work and contribute to the studies on Contemporary Aesthetics and Politics.
