The Replication Crisis in the Biomedical Sciences: An Epistemological Assessment
Research abstract

Peer-review and replication are some of the cornerstones of the scientific method. However, in the daily practice of the scientific community replication is seen as secondary work, least important than original contributions. Nobody has ever tried to replicate most of the published research available, and when there are attempts of replication, they often fail. This situation has led to the so-called Replication Crisis. The crisis is old, but only in the last decade it has been acknowledged and discussed. In a survey published in 2016 by Nature, 90% of the interviewed scientists agreed that there was a replication crisis. Its effects were more prominently seen in psychology and medicine, where many high impact studies have failed the replication test. This has raised many questions: is science broken? Is most of the published science wrong? How is this crisis affecting biomedical research? Moreover, is there a solution? In this study, we plan to assess the replication crisis in the biomedical sciences through a descriptive approach in philosophy of science.
