Research title
The Possible Intellect and the modi significandi: the grounding of metaphysics in Siger of Brabant
Research abstract

This project aims to continue my master’s research, in which I have discussed how Siger of Brabant proposes, at his Questions on Metaphysics, the thesis according to which the act of being (esse) belongs to the essence of caused beings (ens). That thesis presupposes a modus significandi theory regulating the relations between sentences, propositional content and things that is linked to an Avicennian theory of “certitude” or “certification” (certitudo). Here we propose a more accurate examination of the ground of those theories: the theory of Siger on the Potential Intellect, particularly a) the apprehension of the intelligible species from which we have the point of departure of different ways of signification, b) the constituition of the universal that comes from this metaphysic.
