Hobbes and the political problematization of religion
Research abstract

Religious and political ideologies have been concerned with establishing links between the sovereign and his people, as a way of convincing and guaranteeing the submission of political communities. The religious element has been used as a brake and support for political power. This is the case, in ancient Egypt, where political power and religion moved hand in hand, through the pharaoh who was considered as the living representation of god. This project intends to analyze the problem of religion in modern States based on the political thought of Thomas Hobbes, considered by many scholars to be one of the creators of the modern State. How can his analysis of religion, or rather the role of religion within the political body, help in the analysis of this problem? What is the role of God within the Hobbesian political system? What is the place of religion and the function of faith within the State? How can Hobbes' critique of religion help us understand the political problem of religion? How do these questions in Hobbes make religion a political problem or solution?
