Research title
Time and history in Giambattista Vico's New Science
Research abstract

The conception of history elaborated by Giambattista Vico, in his work New Science , seems to combine within itself distinct and perhaps even ambivalent temporal structures. In addition to the time of human creations - historical time - such conception would also support another temporal greatness which, underlying eternal ideal history, would mobilize a model inaccessible to experience - the eternity. Combined in a conception of history which, in spite of cartesian rationalism, would affirm not only the scientificity of historical knowledge, but that it is constituted from the study of the humanities of rhetorical tradition, so discredited at the end of the XVII century. Such temporal structures would also be traced back to two argumentative axes of Vico's work: theory of knowledge and metaphysics; with which the present project intends to occupy.
