LEVELS OF INTERPRETATION IN VISUAL PERCEPTION AND THE “SEEING AS”
Research abstract

This work seeks to demonstrate how the interpretative load of visual perception can be divided from at least three levels of theorizing, such as proposed by Pessoa Júnior (2015). It will be shown how Hanson’s notion of “seeing as” can be explained coherently from the levels of interpretation, based on experimental psychology’s cases. Starting from the definition of the low level of interpretation, this level will be understood as an active answer from the observer on organizing, structuring and focusing on visual elements. This will be seen from Lashley’s (1932), Watson and Kramer’s (1999) experiments and from Gestalt’s theory. The second level of interpretation will be seen stemming from the influence of subjective elements about what is observed. At this step, it will be noticed the influence of the subject’s values, beliefs and experiences on the visual experience. This will be based on Bruner and Goodman’s (1947) experiment. At last, the third level of interpretation will count with the most intricate form of theorizing, in which the current theories and paradigms are influencing directly the way that the subject visually experiences the object.
