MODERN MELANCHOLY IN THE WORK OF FRANCISCO DE GOYA
Research abstract

Melancholy as an emotion and a concept has been studied for centuries, as well as its expression in the visual arts. However, if analyzed historically, we perceive certain differences in this phenomenon considered from antiquity and modernity. Those who have ventured most to understand and interpret this emotion are related to the romantic movement, politics and religion. In this research, we propose to understand melancholy - through the work of the Spanish artist Francisco de Goya - as a necessary product of "modernity". Through the analysis of the artist's prints and canvases, we aim to make melancholy explicit as a malaise and a critical denunciation of society that is radically transformed with the emergence and unfolding of the Enlightenment, as a romantic and anti-capitalist self-criticism of bourgeois modernity. The main objective of the project is to understand the constellation of modern melancholy in Goya's work, which involves analyzing the concepts of modernity, romanticism and specifically modern melancholy, as well as we intend to demonstrate how his work is also a reflective material about his time and reverberations that reach them.
