THE CONCEPT OF GIFT AS MEDIATION BETWEEN PREDESTINATION AND FREE WILL IN THE LATER WORKS OF AUGUSTINE OF HIPPO
Research abstract

This doctoral project investigates the intricate relationship between predestination and free will in the later works of Augustine of Hippo, focusing on the role of the concept of "gift" as a mediator. Augustine seeks to reconcile divine predestination and human freedom, emphasizing the influence of divine grace. The works "On the Predestination of the Saints" and "On the Gift of Perseverance" are the primary points of analysis, as Augustine explores the interconnection between predestination and human will in them. Divine grace, represented by the concept of "caritas" (Christian love), acts as an intermediary between these ideas, allowing individuals to choose the good freely. The research aims to highlight that divine grace empowers human will and strengthens the choice for the good, while maintaining individual freedom. The project also delves into perseverance as a universal gift, linked to grace, which supports individuals on their journey to the end. In summary, this doctoral project aims to clarify how Augustine uses the "gift" concept to harmonize predestination and free will, highlighting divine grace as the connection between these apparent contradictions.
