Research title
Schopenhauer's influence on the American expressionist painter Paul Jackson Pollock
Research abstract

This study aimed to identify the influence of Arthur Schopenhauer's metaphysical concepts of beauty on the work of North American painters of Abstract Expressionism. In that sense, we explored Schopenhauer's concept of the sublime, including some Kant's notions, emphasizing the mathematical and dynamic sublime. We also considered the idea that a genius is someone whose primacy captures and transforms an idea into a work of art. The paintings of the artist Paul Jackson Pollock were analyzed to observe how Schopenhauer’s concept of the sublime is found in North American Abstract Expressionism.
