Our aim with this research is to demonstrate that, in addition to the works produced in the university context and scholastic disputes, sermons can also be interpreted as vehicles for philosophical transmission. In this work, we propose an analysis of Master Eckhart's Sermon 86, identifying its philosophical density. The research will focus especially on Eckhart's re-reading of the concept of the “contemplative life” and its unity with the active life, based on the symbolic interpretation of the figures of Martha and Mary. The aim is to understand how this concept is reformulated, becoming central not only to the understanding of moral virtues, but also to charity as an expression of ethics. In this way, the aim is to highlight how the contemplative life united to the active life, in Eckhart, takes on a fundamental ethical role, serving as a source of inspiration and motivation for the concept of “perfection”.
