Research title
Romanticism and modernity: a study of Antonio Candido's critical method
Research abstract

This research project intends to interpret the work of Antonio Candido (1918 - 2017), investigating the impact of Romanticism on his literary observations. Beyond the determination of a “romantic school”, the aim is to show how Candido develops his own sense of the subject, to the point of sustaining it as a determining analytical criterion for modern literature and society. To this end, the project will be based on the transcripts of two unpublished courses given by the author: the first at the São Paulo State University “Júlio de Mesquita Filho” in 1989, entitled Romanticism and Modernism. Divided into five sessions, the lectures aimed to demonstrate how the thematic and formal tendencies designed by Romanticism are present in all modern literary schools and find their culmination in Modernism. The second material deals with a course given in 1961 in Paris at the Institut des hautes études d'Amérique latine, also designed around the same field of problems.
