Egalitarian Constructions: Moral Theory and Social Equality
Research abstract

The dissertation seeks to articulate the conceptual nature and normative implications of socially anchored forms of depersonalization — or, more simply, social depersonalization. Its aim is to demonstrate that the concept of depersonalization, understood as the most general manifestation of the categorical error of conceiving and/or treating a person or group as a thing, underpins the normative judgments of socialist, feminist, and antiracist theories, three of the most significant expressions of contemporary egalitarianism. A central contribution of the dissertation is to demonstrate that practices of depersonalization can be understood as the denial of second-person moral authority, which is essential for claiming interests, rights, or even personal individuality among equals.
