We aim to study the meaning of the idea, supported by Marilena Chaui, that sexual repression is embedded in the structures of Brazilian society and reveals the existence of a generalized authoritarianism characterized by the confusion between the public and the private. This work is divided into three parts: in the first, we focus on how the issue of authoritarianism presents itself for Marilena Chaui and how she sought to identify her own authoritarianism; in the second, we examine the relationship between the text and context, and between the context and the text, in Chaui's philosophical production concerning the issue of sexual repression; and in the third, we delve into the issue of sexual repression itself and its relationship with the idea of sexual difference.
