Research title
Dreams in Adorno: a study on the Traumprotokolle
Research abstract

The aim of this research is to produce an analysis of dreams in Theodor Adorno. This means we will conduct a meticulous reading of his posthumously published book, Traumprotokolle, which contains dream notes from the philosopher from 1934 to 1969, just a few months before his death. This reading will be undertaken in light of an investigation into the status of dreams within Adorno's work. With this, we intend to explore the reasons that led the philosopher to choose to publish this distorted version of an account of oneself. By clarifying the significance of Freudian thought and the experience of the unconscious for Adorno's theoretical formulations, as well as examining various passages in which Adorno explicitly discusses dreams in his work, we will proceed to an analysis of the raw accounts of his dreams. We will sharpen a hypothesis of interpretation in which it becomes possible to glimpse the dream as an object of social critique. To this end, we will employ a psychoanalytic reading that, through Adorno's perspective, also accommodates the material and objective—historical-social—dimension of the seemingly nonsensical experiences of a dream.
