LAVOISIER, A READER OF CONDILLAC?LANGUAGE AND SCIENCE IN THE ENLIGHTENMENT
Research abstract

Étienne Bonnot de Condillac is known for his contributions to empiricism and the theory of language, arguing that the foundation of all knowledge is language. Antoine Lavoisier, a French chemist born in 1743 who died in 1794, wrote a work titled "Elementary Treatise of Chemistry" in 1789, where he criticized traditional chemical theories and proposed what he himself called a scientific revolution, which consisted of the reformulation of chemical nomenclature. Lavoisier states in the "Elementary Treatise of Chemistry" of 1789 that his work was based on the epistemological foundations of Condillac, emphasizing the importance of language in scientific knowledge. Before producing the Treatise, Lavoisier had already undertaken a project to reform chemical language in 1787, titled "Method of Chemical Nomenclature." This implies that it is not enough to compile a lexicon of terms; it is necessary to adopt a method, which, according to Lavoisier, is the one laid out in Condillac's works: the method of analysis. However, there is no consensus on the role played by Condillac in the development of modern chemistry.
