Research title
A STUDY ON SUBJECTIVE EXPERIENCES IN NONHUMAN ANIMALS
Research abstract

In the last decades, evidence has emerged that human beings are not the only conscious beings. This has promoted an increasing scientific and academic interest in research on understanding conscious states in nonhuman animals. Questions about which animals are conscious and the content of their conscious experiences are among the most debated themes in the interdisciplinary field of animal consciousness and philosophy. This project intends to present a research proposal focusing on the nature of subjective experiences in nonhuman animals. The objective is to distinguish modern approaches for identifying consciousness in animals. We consider that approaches focusing on varied evidence and a multidimensional framework of consciousness can provide a subjective profile of these animals, including different species. The aim is to enhance our understanding of animal welfare by better understanding their subjective experiences. Consequently, we suggest that ethical treatment of animals should be expanded to improve their welfare.
