Although it was in his plans, Ernst Cassirer did not develop a specific study of great length on art, as one might expect, for example, from an aesthete. However, his philosophical reflections on the subject exist in reasonable numbers and are scattered throughout his vast production. Of particular note in this context is the constant presence of Goethe, not only as a poet and artist, whose works are worthy of analysis, but above all as a author of philosophical dignity, whose reflections on the different spheres of knowledge - especially art and nature - seem to animate Cassirer's production. The research will investigate, in the strict sense, Goethe's role in Cassirer's reflective set on aesthetics, in dialogue with his consideration of nature, and in the broad sense, to what extent Goethe's production, elaborated through different expressive gestures, had an impact on the development of Cassirer's mature philosophical project, namely the philosophy of symbolic forms. In summary, it will investigate the presence, influence and developments of Goethe's work in Cassirer's philosophy.
