FROM VALENCE TO THE ORBITALS: PHILOSOPHY AND HISTORY OF THE CHEMICAL BOND CONCEPTS
Research abstract
This project intends to study the history of the valence models of chesmitry from the beginning of the 20th century to the approximations methods of quantum chemistry. This will be the ground to dialog with the contemporary debates of the philosophy of chemistry, as regarding the models in chemistry, the chemical mereology and the problem of reducionism. The deepening in these debates will base the discussion regarding the success or unsuccess of certain models or methods of chemistry, as the Lewis model, or Lewis-Langmuir Theory and the Molecular Orbital Method. This work joins historical perspectives with philosophical ones, trying to understand the chemical thinking and the chemical world.
