Melancholy and imaginary creation in the young Sartre's thought
Research abstract

This project proposes the analysis of the notion of melancholy and imaginary creation, based on the early writings of Jean-Paul Sartre. More specifically, we seek to establish the communication between "Nausea", a 1938 novel, and "The Imaginary", a 1940 book. In accordance with the singular characterization of the character Antoine Roquentin, we propose an interpretation of the novel that highlights the notion of melancholy as its background. Our aim is to understand how the subject, called melancholic and crossed by bouts of nausea, relates to reality and to the objects constituted by the imaginary. To this end, we will examine the Sartrian conception of consciousness and the particularities of the unreal.
