Research title
The people in Machiavelli thought
Research abstract

The research investigates the construction of the notion of people in Machiavelli's works, with emphasis on The Prince, the Discourses on the First Decade of Livy and the Histories of Florence, focusing on its role in the dynamics of the cities of Rome and Florence. Our thesis is that the “umore” of the people, defined by Machiavelli in political terms (the desire not to be oppressed), presents a materiality, whether social or economic, which predominantly corresponds to it. We intend to demonstrate that this materiality gives it not only its contours, but some of its constitution conditions and the causes of its corruption. In order to do so, we have carried out a thorough analysis of the way in which our author presents this popular humor, its characteristics and actions in the history of the city of Rome and Florence, an analysis that does not dispense with the identification and understanding of the author's political vocabulary.
