Translation and commentary on the entry Fine Arts from the encyclopedia General Theory of the Fine Arts, from Johann Georg Sulzer
Research abstract

The purpose of this work is to translate and comment on the entry Fine Arts, from the General Theory of Fine Arts (1771-1774), by the Swiss philosopher Johann Georg Sulzer (1720-1779). Sulzer is still a little-known philosopher, and is considered a minor thinker, but reassessments of his thought have placed him as a successful anthropological turning point and an important nexus in the history of 18th-century philosophy. The entry Fine Arts is an essencial text on the philosophy and aesthetics of the period that reflects the author's main general ideas and the role of fine arts in human and political formation. In this sense, the translation of the entry Fine Arts is not limited to it, and in addition to translations of other entries (Force, Taste, Nature), this work seeks to note the proximity of Sulzer's thought to Friedrich Schiller, especially in his text on Aesthetic Education of Man (1795).
