INSUPERABLE NAUSEA: A SPIRAL OF MELANCHOLY IN THE WORK OF JEAN-PAUL SARTRE
Research abstract

This project aims to examine the notion of melancholy, as mentioned by Sartre, at different moments in his thinking. While it is possible to say that Nausea opens up a field of investigation for the theme, we consider that the 1938 book does not exhaust the scope of the question. As the author's texts from different periods indicate, the presence of melancholy in relevant areas of analysis can be identified in works that precede and follow the 1938 book. Thus, we take into account both the author's theoretical-philosophical texts and literary texts that point to the centrality of melancholy for understanding aspects of Sartre's intellectual project that encompass aesthetics, existential psychoanalysis, ontology, and phenomenology.
