Throughout history, various authors have argued that phenomenal consciousness ist a material thing, while others have criticized this position. Authors who argue that phenomenal consciousness is material tend to adhere to a materialist metaphysics, which holds that everything that exists in reality is material. However, the most traditional line of criticism of materialism has been through phenomenal consciousness. There is a group of arguments that intend to justify the thesis that materialism does not satisfactorily explains phenomenal consciousness. In our project, we intend to discuss five traditional arguments against materialism based on phenomenal consciousness, that is, 1) the Knowledge Argument, 2) the Zombie Argument, 3) the Leibniz's Mill, 4) the "What is it like to be a bat?" argument and 5) the Inverted Qualia argument.
