THE ABSOLUTELY TRIVIAL: THE SPIRIT OF CLOTHES BETWEEN HEGEL AND ADORNO
Research abstract
This project takes as its point of departure the observation that, despite its undeniable centrality within the symbolic, economic, and cultural matrices of modernity, fashion has remained a peripheral concern within the philosophical canon—frequently relegated to the realm of the trivial, the illusory, or the merely feminine. Such a dismissal stands in sharp contrast to the cultural and aesthetic force of dress as a privileged vehicle for the historical and spiritual articulation of subjectivity. Positioned at the crossroads of aesthetics and cultural critique, the present inquiry seeks to examine whether—and to what extent—clothing may be conceived as an authentic art form, with particular attention to the writings of Hegel and Adorno.
