Between the national and the colonial: The construction of Brazilian national identity in the painting The First Mass of Brazil
Research abstract

In 1859, Victor Meirelles was stimulated by his mentor, Araújo Porto Alegre, to paint a work based on the Carta do Achamento by Pero Vaz de Caminha. In this work, the artist should represent the Brazilian national character according to the model of academic history painting of the period. In order to understand the artist's answer to this problem, this research seeks to recover the iconography that was relevant to Meirelles in the construction of his canvas A Primeira Missa no Brasil (The First Mass in Brazil). Recognizing three groups of images to which the artist refers in his work, the iconography about the Brazilian territory and its population, the French nationalist iconography and the iconography of modern colonization.
