Research title
The undecidable avant-garde: the problem of the artistic neo-avant-garde between the modern and the contemporary
Research abstract

The research aims to extend a critical investigation into the dense debate surrounding the problem of artistic neo-avant-garde, a problem opened up by the publication of the book “Theory of the avant-garde” (1974), by Peter Bürger, and which was followed through theoretical discussion supported by authors such as Benjamin Buchloh, Hal Foster, Dietrich Scheunemann and others. To this end, it articulates a bibliographic compilation of the main texts and works that reflect on the issue, aiming to address its possible implications simultaneously from an aesthetic, philosophical, historical and conceptual point of view, and chooses the artistic production of Robert Rauschenberg (1925 - 2008) as a inflection point that would authorize tensioning such a set of readings - suggesting, finally, through the use of the French philosophy of difference, another mechanism of interpretation centered on the notion of "undecidability", through which the main contributions of the artistic neo-avant-garde to the aesthetic contemporary debate are considered.
