Colors and sounds in Port-Royal and Newton: a Foucauldian analysis of Classical representation and synesthesia
Research abstract

This study intends to reveal the concepts of representation and synesthesia in both Port-Royal and Newtonian thought. More specifically, we will examine the Port-Royal Grammar and Logic, along with Newton’s De gravitatione and Opticks, to understand how the notions of representation and inter-sensoriality are employed. To do this efficiently, we will first explain what representability is for Foucault, using The Order of Things as our primary bibliographical touchstone. The goal, in this initial phase, is to accomplish two tasks at once: clarify what representation is in Foucauldian terms and familiarize the reader with the methodology used to achieve this idea – i.e., archaeology. This will be beneficial because, in the next two parts, we will attempt to implement aspects of this historiographical practice to reveal previously obscure properties in the Port-Royal works and Newton.
