Research title
Hegel and classical sculpture in Aesthetics: the ideal figure of spirit embodied in matter
Research abstract

This project is about classical sculpture as the perfect unity between the idea, the Form, and the Content of the spirit according to Hegel in his Aesthetic. The problem turns around the significance of works of art, or as Hegel puts it, the apprehension of their Contents of concrete Form. And more specifically, in the case of this research, the incorporation of the ideal of the spirit into the hard, cold and inert matter of classical sculpture. Of the theses surrounding this project, two are worth highlighting. The first concerns the predominance of the intelligible over the sensible in aesthetic experience. The second is Hegel's belief that sight and hearing are the only senses that lead to contemplation, or theoretical reflection, on works of art. The main objective is to critique these theses based on Hegel's “System of the Particular Arts” (CE, vol. III, p. 13 ff.), and as a result, a theoretical, historical and critical survey of statuary.
