Hegel and Spinoza: and indirect debate about teleology
Research abstract

In this work we intend to explain how both Hegel and Spinoza deal with the notion of “teleology” and compare their different approaches. Our hypothesis is that the differences between the ways of approaching the issue of teleology, in the two systems, is a small example that can lead us to the central problems of the great indirect debate between Spinoza and Hegel. Therefore, we start from a comparison between the different places that teleology occupies in the two systems (while, for Hegel, teleology is a crucial moment in the development of his system, there is no place for teleology in Spinoza's work) to then, insert this comparison within the already established tradition of dialogue between the two philosophies. Therefore, we selected a possible comparison between the two philosophies, starting from a specific concept (teleology) and then placing this comparison within the already developed debate. Therefore, the path of this dissertation will be: starting from the different positions in relation to teleology, thinking about the difference between the two positions based on Hegel's criticisms of Spinoza's thought and, finally, reevaluating the Hegelian criticism.
