χαραδριός bird
Research abstract

This research aims to present a survey and commentary on passages featuring the bird χαραδριός. Often associated with curing jaundice when the bird looks at the sick person, from the dissemination of the work Physiologus, the χαραδριός came to be associated with curing any illness; the direction of its gaze, fixed on the sick person or away from them, came to predict either recovery or death, respectively. A brief analysis of its images is also presented, including: miniatures from bestiaries of the 10th to the 15th centuries, a portal of St. Mary’s Church in Alne, England, and a stained glass window from the Saint-Jean Cathedral in Lyon, France.
