This dissertation aims to investigate the nature of hermeneutics and how it differs from both simple interpretation and specialised interpretations. Every investigation has a conceptual framework, and the conceptual framework of this investigation is either the philosophy of Schleiermacher or the historical, psychological, social and intellectual context which led the author to address hermeneutics. This context entails scrutinising the intellectual references of Schleiermacher, which authors are his precursors and to what degree, in which general investigative currents he is situated, which individuals from his social circle shaped his opinions argumentatively or affectively, as well as the manner in which his view of hermeneutics was received, how it changed over time, who made direct or indirect use of it and when it lost relevance.
