Research title
Per monstra ad sphaeram - Magic and Art in Aby Warburg
Research abstract

Both art and magic operate, for Warburg, the passage from phobia to orientation, promoted by a language that rationalizes it. Both are forms of symbolic thought, which are manifested in two fundamental aspects of culture: human orientation and the expression of affections. This research sought to investigate the relationship between art and magic as polar functions that express the “space of thought” [Denkraum], as well as the Warburgian identification of the motto “Per monstra ad sphaeram” as a law. The objective was to establish a bridge between this law, the role of memory in Warburg's conceptual framework and the centrality of the concept of polarity, which justifies the epithet given by the author to his research: “iconology of intervals”.
