Research title
Goethe’s great confession: poetry between history, nature and subjectivity
Research abstract

The research proposes the clarification of the genesis and status of the comprehension of poetry implied in Goethe's description, in Poetry and Truth, of his own works as “fragments of a great confession”. Poetry as a confession is constituted through the thematic articulation of history, nature and subjectivity. This thematic articulation situates Goethe's comprehension of his own poetic achievement in the context of the consolidation of aesthetics as a philosophical discourse and its developments in the systematic philosophies of art between the 18th and 19th centuries.
