Game as a medium for self-understanding and revelation of oneself in Hans-Georg Gadamer’s philosophical hermeneutics
Research abstract

This thesis presents, based on Hans-Georg Gadamer’s thought, a discussion about another way of knowing, which differs from the model proposed by methodical science, emphasizing the relationship between “game” and art. It thus investigates the game of art in its most diverse modes of representation, not only as an element of aesthetic enjoyment, but as an occurrence of truth. It criticizes the reduction of the work of art to purely aesthetic dimensions, since such reduction still plays into the hands of methodical consciousness, which claims a monopoly on the notion of truth, limiting it to the scope of what is scientifically knowable. Gadamer recognizes, based on the notion of game, that art has its own truth, a notion relevant to justify the mode of knowledge of the human sciences, which is human understanding and self-understanding, essential for an action marked by otherness, by the ability to listen to the other, recognizing that he or she may be right — which is possible only through the dialogical game.
